What is SMS Gateway?

A platform or service that acts as the intermediary between a business's application and mobile networks, routing SMS messages to recipients across carriers and countries.

An SMS gateway is the technical infrastructure that bridges a business's messaging system and the world's mobile networks. When a business sends an SMS through an API or web platform, the gateway receives the request, validates it against DLT and compliance rules, routes the message to the appropriate mobile network operator (MNO) based on the recipient's number, and delivers it to the device. The gateway also handles return traffic—delivery receipts, inbound messages, and SMPP callbacks—back to the business's system. SMS gateways connect to multiple operators simultaneously for redundancy and optimal delivery rates. Key evaluation criteria include throughput (messages per second), delivery SLA, uptime guarantee, route quality, compliance support, and API documentation quality.
